Artist Bio
Tom Wesselmann was one of the leading Pop Art artists of the 1960s. He created collages and assemblages from everyday objects and advertising materials, aiming to make his works as impactful as the Abstract Expressionism he admired. Wesselmann’s Great American Nude series is his most renowned, characterized by bold colors and rounded forms.
Born: February 23, 1931, in Cincinnati, Ohio
1949-1951: Studied at Hiram College, Ohio
1951: Began studying psychology at the University of Cincinnati
1953-1954: Interrupted his studies for military service, during which he started drawing cartoons
1956: Graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Cincinnati
1956: Enrolled in art studies at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, Ohio
1956-1959: Continued his studies at the Cooper Union in New York, where he ultimately earned his diploma
2004: Passed away in New York City due to complications from heart surgery
